Happy Holidays!

Sam is typical of the young people who find Boys & Girls Clubs to be their route to growth in learning, both academically and with new skill sets. He has experienced the benefit of a year of membership at the Fernandina Club. As a result Sam has excelled in 4th grade at Emma Love Hardy Elementary where he earns A grades in math, and has found a love of basketball by playing the game after school at the Club. Most important of all, Sam feels he belongs at the Club together with all his new friends. At age 10, his hopes for the future include college, perhaps on a basketball scholarship, with a dream of a pro career in that sport. Sam’s drive and ambition will surely take him success.

Hadeia is a third grader who has been a member of the Fernandina Boys & Girls Club since first grade. She comes to the Club every day after school. Hadeia credits it with enabling her to make the honor roll at school every year and to be a star in math, her favorite subject. But she is a fun-loving kid and Club activities are the best part for her, particularly when she can dance. The third child in a family of four, Hadeia displays a strong sense of responsibility toward her younger sibling and toward her companion Club members. Although just 9 years old, she is determined to excel at school, earn a college scholarship and be a leader in teaching – perhaps a school principal. With her positive attitude and dedication to success in life, the sky is the limit for Hadeia!

Kwari is a mature, well-mannered 17 year-old attending Fernandina Beach High School. He joined the Fernandina Beach Club at the beginning of this school year and testifies that the Club has made an important improvement in his life. Kwari is the oldest of four youngsters being raised by his mom and must shoulder responsibility for his younger siblings. But he is determined to succeed in school, too, and does so with a straight “A” record in his 11th grade studies. The Club has helped Kwari cope with the stress of his dual role of student and caretaker by teaching him to concentrate on one challenge at a time. He also finds the Club environment lets him improve his people skills and stay positive about the good things in his life. By continuing to excel in school, Kwari expects to earn a college scholarship, leading to a career as a pastry chef – a talent in which he has already demonstrated expertise. We believe Kwari is sure to make a tasty success of his life!

Audrey Basch is a likeable 10 year-old who understands the value of working hard to excel. Now in the 5th grade at Emma Love Hardy Elementary School, she has made the Honor Roll in every school year to date. Audrey credits the Club with providing help with her studies when she needs it. Math is her favorite and best subject. Audrey also has made many new friends and learned to play new sports at the Club. Despite problems at home, she does her best to be supportive of her mom and older siblings. Audrey wants to continue to be an outstanding student so that she may earn a college scholarship. Her love of animals inspires her goal to become a veterinarian. Audrey’s maturity and willingness to learn will ensure success on whatever future path she follows.

Lauren has been a member of the Club for two years. In that time, this 11 year-old credits the Club with a positive change in her attitude toward others and in helping her to develop a serious determination to do well in her classes in 6th grade at Fernandina Beach Middle School. She is Treasurer of the Torch Club, active in the Youth for Unity program, a participant in Club community projects and always is available to play sports at the Club. Lauren is dedicated to the Club goals and plans to stay in school through college. She is attracted to a career as a massage therapist. Whatever her future holds, she seems assured of success.

Ramsey is a pleasure to be around. In the 6th grade at Fernandina Beach Middle School, his favorite after school place is the Boys & Girls Club. But Ramsey has important responsibilities at home, too, when he cares for his young sister. At school he likes math and rarely misses a day in class. At the Club his honesty and sense of fair play make him a great role model plus he always seeks ways to help the Club staff and with Club community projects. He is a member of the Torch Club. Ramsey plays on Club basketball and football teams, and is the shortstop for the Reds Little League team. He aspires to a career in professional sports. Ramsey says he is “actively lazy”, becoming easily bored with nothing to do. With such a motivation, Ramsey seems assured of success in the future with that motivation.

Thainique is a credit to the BGC program and to the Fernandina Beach Club. With a strong sense of right and wrong and as a faithful church attendee, she demonstrates an outstanding willingness to help at the Club, in the community and with family. At almost age 11, Thainique is one of four sisters, all members of the Club, and does her best to look out for her younger siblings as well as help other Club members. A good student, she excels in science and, after high school, is determined to attend college. Capitalizing on her ability in basketball and other sports, Thainique plans to earn an athletic scholarship and so further her education. We feel sure her attitude and abilities will carry her far.

Tiasia has been a member of the Fernandina Beach Club for only four months but has become an outstanding addition to the club even in that short time. This 12 year-old is an honor roll student in the 6th grade at Fernandina Beach Middle School and her favorite subject is math. Her younger sister is also a Club member and Tiasia keeps tabs on her when their mom is working. During her time at the Club, Tiasia enjoys reading to younger kids and playing sports. Her ambition is to attend Long Island University outside New York City and become a career woman. We have no doubt Tiasia will continue to succeed at whatever path she takes in the future.

Devon is a husky young man who combines athletic ability with leadership skill. This 12 year-old is in 7th grade at Fernandina Middle School and has been a Boys & Girls Club member for two years. Both his younger brother and sister are Club members and Devon takes pride in being in charge when mom & dad are at work. The Club staff and other members are most impressed with his ability to take on a project and see it through to successful completion. Devon loves sports and plays football for the Middle School team. He expects to play football in high school, earn an athletic scholarship to college and hopes for a career in the NFL. We believe Devon will be a winner on the gridiron and for success in life as well!

Terry Wilson is a young man well acquainted with adversity. Both he and his twin brother, Darrell, were born legally blind. Despite that obstacle, he excels in the 7th grade at Fernandina Middle School and is reputedly the best student in his class. This 14 year-old has been a member of the Fernandina Beach Boys & Girls Club for two years, as have his two brothers. Terry enjoys school and playing basketball, lives with his grandparents but faithfully visits his mom every weekend, and is a regular at church on Sunday. Terry is a real asset to the Club, is active in flag football and was named player of the month last November, and is Sergeant at Arms of the Torch Club. When he reaches high school, Terry hopes to join the ROTC in preparation for a career in the Marine Corps. His motto is “Always do your best”. BGC takes great pride in Terry! We know his “best” will carry him far!

Student of the Month Dec 2010Somjai Bailey is a great person to be around. She attends 4th grade at Emma Love Hardy Elementary School and, at age 9, is the oldest of four siblings, all girls and all two year members of the Fernandina Club. Somjai is a fine role model for her sisters and all the younger members of the Club and is frequently seen helping others with their homework. An excellent student, she loves to read and performs well in both reading and math. And her schoolwork does not take detract from her housework where she does more than her share in helping her mom keep everything clean. When Somjai finishes college, she wants to make a career in a field devoted to helping others.

Youth of the Month November 2010Carmesha is an enthusiastic 3rd Grader at Emma Love Hardee Elementary, age 9, who enjoys school and sports. Her favorite sport is basketball and she plays on the Club team as well as competing in kickball and tetherball. A member of the Fernandina Beach Club for three years, she is remarkably mature for her age. Her upbeat attitude makes her a real asset to the Club where she readily lends support to staff and other kids. At home, Carmesha is the oldest of four children, with two brothers who also are Club members, and she shows a responsibility for her siblings that is outstanding. Even at her tender age, Carmesha has serious plans for her future, including college at University of Florida and, after medical school, a career as a pediatrician.

Crishelle is 11 years old, attends 6th grade in Fernandina Middle School where she is an AB Honor Roll student. She has been a member of the Fernandina Beach Club for two years. Living with her three younger sisters who are also Club members, Crishelle is busy at home with housework at home but still finds time for her favorite activity: reading. Her love of reading shows in her grades at school and she also excels in math. Although a quiet person, she is President of the Torch Club and plays fl ute in the Middle School band. Crishelle plans to go to college and medical school so she can realize her ambition to become an anesthesiologist.

Matthew Brooker is 10 years old, attends 5th grade at Emma Love Hardy Elementary School where he does well as a scholar. He enrolled in the Fernandina Beach Club as a result of the great experience he had at summer camp last summer, joining his brother and sister as Club members. Matthew displays enthusiasm for all Club activities and is first in line when volunteers are needed. His favorite activities are baseball and swimming but he doesn’t let them keep him from his chores at home. Matthew’s happy attitude shows up in the large number of friends he has made at school and in the Club. When he grows up, he aspires to attend college and would love to be a pilot or baseball professional.
